It is no secret that I am a huge fan of mussels! I can only really get hold of them during actual mussel season here in Berlin. I love bringing home a big pack of mussels and their shells clinking away as you pour them into the pan. My popular go to dish is Mussels in a White Wine Sauce with Garlic Butter Ciabatta. You just can’t beat scooping up that delicious broth with some crispy garlic bread. And I think with mussels it quite often is all about that sauce or broth that they were steamed in. For a little extra kick I love a big bowl of Coriander and Harissa Mussels that has a delicious Eastern Mediterranean feel to it….

Spaghetti Vongole
When it comes to food, autumn has to be my favourite time of the year! From the start of the root veg creeping into the supermarkets, juicy pumpkins lined up ready to be turned into a delicious soup or sweet yet nutty butternut squash to make the perfect warming salad , to the run up to Thanksgiving, this time of the year is about celebrating good food and making the most of those cosy evenings. While I do not actually celebrate Thanksgiving I am each year inspired by American food bloggers. It is a time to sit down with family and friends over good food and make the most of the autumn’s produce….
Mussels in a White Wine Sauce with Garlic Butter Ciabatta
We did it! Well almost anyway… The first week back at work after the Christmas holidays is almost over and thankfully it was a short one! While it is nice to get back to a more normal routine I am missing the long catch ups with family and friends, lazy breakfasts and late nights watching tv or going to the pub after a rich dinner with plenty of wine. Unfortunately we cannot live like this all the time… if only! But we shouldn’t get so down about January even if it does feel impossible not to be hit with those post-Christmas blues…
Coriander and Harissa Mussels
That’s it – summer is officially over. We have had a great summer in Berlin with plenty of sunshine and warm evenings to enjoy an aperol spritz on the balcony or sitting in a beer garden. But we shouldn’t be all doom and gloom about the end of summer. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons and you can already see the fresh autumnal produce creeping into the supermarkets. Pumpkins, apples and root veg – I am already planning on making my next batch of chutney! …
Mussel Linguine
Autumn is now in full swing and it’s not the sunny, crispy leaves autumn kind of weather either! It is grey, cold and wet – summer is offically over. Yet autumn is actually one of my favourite seasons for food. Pumpkins are stacked up in the supermarket ready for halloween leaving the leftovers tasting delicious in this pumpkin soup. There is also no shortage of apples and it’s the perfect weather to cosy up with a cup of tea and a slice of this apple cake. But it is mussel season that is my favourite and I was quick to cook up a batch of these mussles cooked in a tomato and basil broth!…
Steamed Mussels in a Tomato and Basil Broth
The other week I was pleasantly surprised to find that my local Rewe had packets of fresh mussels in the fridge sourced from Belgium. Mussels are at their most succulent right now as they thrive in the cold water which is why I am happily making the most of mussel season and snapping up packets during my supermarket visits! You can also find mussels at a favourite market of mine, Mitte- Meer or the Galeria Kaufhof often have a good selection on offer….
Mussel and Prawn Tagliatelle
This chilly weather is the perfect season for mussels. They thrive in the cold water which makes it easier to find fresh mussels in your local supermarket during the cooler months. Even the Germans have been importing them over from Belgium/ Britain and stocking up in my local Rewe….
Mussel and Prawn Tagliatelle
I was in the supermarket last Friday and saw some imported mussels from Belgium in the fridge. It’s the perfect time of the year for them and as any kind of seafood is near impossible to find in Berlin I soon snapped these up!
If you are looking for a special recipe this weekend then look no further. This is easy to make but a real treat and everyone will love it. I made this last weekend and the creamy sauce was just perfect with the mussels. The chili flakes also gave it that extra kick. …
