I have mentioned before that I am always a little disappointed with Mexican food in Berlin. While good places such as Santa Cantina do open up it is also often hard for their business to thrive. So often I receive the news that a good quality restaurant has had to close down and yet when I walk down the street I can’t move for all the cheap ‘Mexican’ restaurants serving baked enchiladas smothered in sour cream and mozzarella….

Quesadillas with Guacamole and Salsa
Berlin is steadily improving in the Mexican food department! When I first moved here and until recently Mexican style restaurants were clearly catering towards the German taste of all things bland and fear of anything that has spice. The complete opposite to the hot, spicy, fresh and zingy tastes of Mexican food that it is no wonder a lot of places simply serve stodgy style enchiladas baked in cheese and smothered in sour cream or nachos that are made up of cheap supermarket tortilla chips…
Mexican Style Quiche
It always surprises me how difficult it is to find quiche in a German supermarket – everyone loves quiche! I always think back to my student days and shopping in Asda or Tesco. There would be a huge selection of quiche! But when I moved to Germany it was near impossible to find a ready made quiche in the supermarket. Now, I am kind of grateful … making your own is not only easy but also delicious!…
Mexican Style Scrambled Eggs
One of the things I love the most about the weekend is a lazy brunch! Mexican scrambled eggs are a real pick me up, which makes them perfect the next day after a long night and are a lovely alternative to your standard scrambled eggs in the morning….

Exberliner Column: Burrito Bowl
I am not going to pretend to know about good Tex Mex food. I am British, ergo we just grew up with the Old El Paso kits from the supermarket. But living here in Berlin I am aware that a lot of us have fallen back on the good ol’ burrito or taco. Exberliner recently reviewed some of the places where you can get the real thing. Ta’Cabrón is a favourite of mine and then of course there is the original Dolores where their burrito bowls are a real winner!…
Freshly Made Salsa
I have my left over chili from last night and as it is such a lovely evening I have made a quick salsa. For all those cooking in Germany please make sure to buy your crushed chilis from an Asian store. German supermarkets sell chili powder and crushed chilis but they are not hot at all. Also, don’t be shy in adding the crushed chilis to your salsa. We are not making a tomato sauce and a salsa is meant to be hot!
Perfect with nachos or chili con carne. …
I Have That Summer Feeling: Guacamole
It feels like summer is on it’s way. I have my Kate Middleton inspired Mac and big sunglasses on and I no longer have to be crammed onto the tram as I can walk home from work in the sunshine. I stopped by the fruit and veg store on my way home today and picked up 2 fresh avocados. Guacamole is easy to make and it made my chili dish that little bit more exciting! I have kept my guacamole simple so that in the future all you need to do is pick up some avocados on your way home and you will probably have everything else in your kitchen. …
