In the past I have found lunch the most trickiest of meals to plan for. While I have mentioned in my previous blog post the all too often temptation to eat out in the evening after a long day in the office, I actually find the eating out at lunchtime far more tempting. The first issue has always been that I have mostly worked in central Berlin. I am often surrounded by plenty of restaurants and cafes to go out for lunch and my colleagues have always felt the same, resulting in me wanting to go out not just for the delicious food on offer but also to socialise and not be left in the office alone…

Courgetti with Avocado and Cashew Pesto
We have Hemsley and Hemsley to thank for spiralized recipes being so popular and bringing pasta back to those who are gluten intolerent! I don’t have a gluten intolerence but I absolutely love courgetti. I have always tried to cut back on the carbs by using lots of fresh vegetables and courgetti is perfect for this. It may seem like a bit of a ‘health fad’ at the moment but it really is a great alternative to some heavy glutenous pasta and a great way to pack in more of your five a day. …
Banana Cereal Bars
In my previous blog post I mentioned how much of a fan I have become of food writers such as Deliciously Ella and Madeliene Shaw. I love Deliciously Ella for her complete vegan and gluten, dairy and sugar free recipes. I also find Madeleine Shaw’s recipes absolutely delicious (and quick and easy!) where she simply takes on a dairy, sugar and gluten free diet and still uses fresh fish and meat, something that I could not wipe out from my food intake completely! What got me to really test out their recipes properly …
Fattoush
It is no secret that I am a frequent visitor at Babel on Kastianienallee as the name frequently pops up in my blogs. This is not just because it happens to be very local but also because the food is tasty and fresh. While the falafel teller may be my regular choice I am also a big fan of the fattoush – a salad of mixed herbs and packed with grilled pitta bread….
Exberliner Column: Caesar Salad
You can’t beat a classic Caesar salad! Many of us including myself call this the King of Salads for its rich and creamy dressing with salty anchovies and parmesan. Yet this is such a quick and easy recipe that it is regular mid-week meal of mine. And while I love the Caesar salads at a regular haunt of mine, Spreegold, this recipe is a tasty and fresh alternative. Make sure to pack up any leftovers for lunch the next day!…
Lunchbox Recipes: Coriander and Lemon Bulgur Salad with Halloumi
Bon Appetit recently wrote an interesting article on how to have a better lunch at work. I am lucky to work in central Berlin – an exciting and dynamic city but the downside to this is that at lunchtime the areas and nearby are packed with tourists and everyone else! Finding somewhere for lunch can be a nightmare, especially when you are busy and rushed for time. I try and bring my own lunch at least 3 times a week to balance it out and while I do love a good Sandwich it does get a bit tedious!…
Packed Lunch: Tuscan Tuna Sandwich
It is so easy to fall into the habit of grabbing a sandwich from a local bakery or cafe during your lunch break. Of course, we have those days when we do actually venture out of the office and go somewhere to eat, but a lot of the time we eat at our desks and sandwiches are great to grab on the go because they are easy and convenient.
Yet the sandwiches you get from a local supermarket or bakery are incredibly unhealthy. Smothered in mayonnaise, the bread packed with preservatives to keep it ‘in date’ for longer and the filling loaded with salt….
Weekend Lunch: Smoked Salmon Salad with Mozzarella
During the working week it is very easy to grab a sandwich and take it back to our desks or to dash out and enjoy one of Berlin’s various food options. The weekend is then the perfect chance to enjoy a healthier food option. But when do we still find the time?
Since moving to Berlin I have grown to love the whole ‘everything is closed on Sundays apart from cafes and fleamarkets’ thing. It’s great! The one day in the week when I can catch up with blogging, sorting through my photos, catching up on emails to friends, walks in the sunshine (when it actually shines!) and just general laziness. But this means that Saturday is a day to fit in everything else that I have no time for during the week and cannot do on a Sunday….
