With less than a week to go until Christmas Day many of us are deciding on the finishing touches to the big dinner. I am looking forward to the roast turkey with the whole shabang – roast potatoes, vegetables, ham, gravy and then the side dishes. My two favourites are pork stuffing and cranberry sauce….

Cheat’s Garlic Bread
I was in Florence last week. Beautiful city! And the food and wine are especially good to enjoy! One thing I did notice was that bread is served with more or less every meal course and a lot of Italians were using the bread to soak up any leftover pasta sauce or juices from their plate. Piles of bread and plenty of olive oil are probably my downfall! I just can’t help but to dig in for more.
I do try and keep my bread down to a minimum but sometimes you just need that bread on the side. I stick to bread when I am serving a soup or a simple salad in order to avoid too many carbs!…
Exberliner Column: Chicken Katsu Curry
I am on the hunt for Japanese food. OK, we are not short of sushi over here and there are new restaurants such as Hashi Kitchen which have a more varied menu but even these menus focus mainly on sushi.
I love sushi and am still a regular at my local sushi restaurant Aiko, yet I can’t help but feel that Japanese food is kind of lost in Berlin. Or those sushi restaurants that do serve other dishes end up falling into the generic trap of offering noodles in a coconut sauce. Basically: not really Japanese at all….
Asparagus and Walnut Risotto
Sunday blog posts are usually breakfast or lunch related. But I have just realised that May is coming to an end which means asparagus season is almost behind us! It kind of makes sense now as to why all the Germans are frantically filling up their shopping baskets with asparagus. We only have a couple of weeks of Spargelzeit left! AND Monday is a public holiday over in Germany, so what better way to spend the weekend than cooking up a few asparagus treats!…
Oriental Duck Salad
May is a pretty good month for holidays here in Berlin. It is just a shame that they happen to fall mid-week and not organised to fall on a Monday. But even though May has three public holidays I have learned not to complain too much! We do have to wait until October for our next holiday after all…
This is not stopping me from having that Friday feeling though! Yesterday may have been a holiday and I am only in the office one day, but there is still cause for celebration for the upcoming weekend! I will probably be spending it enjoying the sunshine and cooking – catching up on blog posts and deadlines that I have fallen behind with this past week…!…
Spring Salmon Pasta
So I have been hit with a stomach bug the last week that has made food blogging and testing out new recipes incredibly difficult! But I am back now and Spring is also in full swing!
I love Spring. Not only for the sunshine but also for the wonderful fruit and vegetables that you can find in the supermarket or at a local farmers market. This week I made a colourful Spring pasta that makes use of all the latest seasonal foods. Plus it is a light and easy meal for after work!
We often mistake a creamy pasta for being packed full of butter and loads of cream….
Exberliner Column: Asparagus Wrapped in Ham with a Mustard Sauce
It’s that time of the year again – Spargelzeit! The food markets are stocked up with white asparagus, restaurant menus are packed with the latest seasonal good and Kaisers have cleverly placed packets of Hollandaise sauce and Schwarzwald Schinken next to the asparagus for us to readily pick up the ingredients to make a classic German dish.
I am not sure who is more excited: me, or the Germans? When I first moved to Berlin I was surprised by all the
excitement surrounding Spargelzeit. I mean you can quite often get asparagus in a large British supermarket at Christmas time even if is it imported and at high prices. …
Exberliner Column: Tagliatelle with a Fresh Green Pesto
I invited a few friends around for dinner last week. Seeing as they have all been following my food
blog I wanted to make a good impression and being quite an organized person, I had carefully planned what I was going to make, made sure I had enough time and to buy the ingredients the night before.
Feeling really confident that this recipe will go down a treat I head to my local Rewe supermarket. Panic time! They have run out of fresh basil? Why do they have no pine nuts? These are …
