Strawberry season has to be my favourite time of the year. They have summer written all over them. Which is why every year I make a big batch of strawberry jam. Not only is the jam more delicious than any supermarket kind, but when you dig into that jar of sweet strawberries on a cold winter’s day (this recipe will keep you stocked up throughout the cold months) you can think of the Berlin summer….

Exberliner Column: Rhubarb Crumble
I love spring for its seasonal foods (and the sunshine, of course!). Not only am I stocking up on asparagus but I am also making the most of rhubarb season.
I first made Rhubarb crumble when I was at school. It is one of the first things they teach you to make in cookery class and I was rubbish at it! The rhubarb was randomly chopped, it had not been cooked properly and the crumble was more of a lumpy mess. But then what do you really expect from a 10 year old? I felt sorry for my Dad having to eat it – my mum insisting that I save it for later when my Dad gets in from work- and then pretending that it tasted delicious…
How times have changed! Since then I have always enjoyed rhubarb crumble as part of a Sunday family lunch, or making it with my Gran when I was younger. It is thanks to my Mum and Gran that I actually learned to make it properly. And what an easy treat it is to make!…
Dealing with a German Supermarket: Hummus
You know something is wrong when you spot a pot of hummus in a supermarket and find this exciting. This is what happens when you try and master a German supermarket. Don’t get me wrong, I have commented enough times on how I love the
fresh, seasonal goods in Germany and there is no doubt that supermarkets over here are improving! When I very first moved to Berlin (yes, even in Berlin!) I would be lucky to find a packet of tortilla wraps… and the idea of stocking curry powder (any kind, there is no room for being fussy) or Thai red curry paste was totally out of this world. So how do we deal with a German supermarket? It’s simple. Just go back to basics and compromise by replacing a certain ingredient with something else and never, ever rely on the supermarket having a certain ingredient again. I made this mistake one too many times and ended up having a full basket of goods but one vital part of the meal not in my basket – for example red curry paste….
