I am a big fan of Middle Eastern food and koftas are one of my favourite things to eat! I love the traditional lamb koftas, stuffed in some pita bread with a fresh mint salad. But lamb is quite difficult to find in Berlin and can be expensive. I make mine using minced pork which is affordable and easy to find in any local supermarket. I add some chopped apple which gives it a lovely sweet kick.
I often serve mine with a fresh coleslaw and some griddled pitta bread. But a simple green and cucumber salad, some plain yoghurt and wraps also work well!
Pork and Apple Koftas with a Coleslaw

Ingredients
- For the koftas
- 500g minced pork
- 70g breadcrumbs
- 1 appled (peeled, core removed and finely diced)
- Half an onion (peeled and finely diced)
- 1 tspn Tobasco sauce
- Ground black pepper
- For the coleslaw
- Half a white cabbage (cut into thin shreds)
- 3 carrots (peeled and then finely grated)
- 1 red onion (peeled and finely diced)
- 150g low fat creme fraiche
- Juice of half a lemon
- 1 tbspn whole grain Dijon mustard
- Ground black pepper
- Handful of finely chopped parsley
Instructions
- For the koftas: mix everything together in a mixing bowl and then form into medium size patties. Flatten the patties slightly into thick small sausage shapes and then place in the fridge for an hour.
- For the coleslaw: add everything to a large mixing bowl and mix well so that it is all combined. Place in the fridge until ready to serve.
- Heat a large frying pan with 1 tbpsn sunflower oil. Once hot add the koftas and cook on each side for around 5-6 minutes. Once they are cooked through drain them on some kitchen paper.
- Plate up with coleslaw and serve with some griddled pitta’s on the side.
