I am starting a new job this week and so I had a few days holiday to spare in Berlin. This was spent wisely by enjoying the sunshine, reading plenty of books in the sunshine, eating out, meeting with friends, drinking lattes and eating cupcakes … but of course a lot of this was spent doing the household chores and shopping. To make the most of my free time I decided to check out a supermarket that was recommended to me. I was not disappointed! I already knew of some ‘larger’ (when I say large this is not to be confused with a normal size sainsburys and are only slightly bigger than a sainsbury’s express) supermarkets in the outskirt of Berlin. For these you need a car. Yet I came across a big supermarket right on a s-bahn line! Perfect for those using public transport.
The first floor was full of TV’s, fridge freezers, dvds, games, prams… bascially any kind of home stuff. I was not the only one excited by this, even the Germans were excited! The top floor (yes TWO floors in a German supermarket!) was for food and the floor was massive (in German supermarket sense). As you can tell from my picture I came across some real treats! Salt and vinegar pringles, hellmanns mayonnaise, golden syrup, poptarts. I was also excited to find hummus in a pot and fresh guacamole. In the bread section there were plenty of bagels as well as naan bread. I also found plenty of curry sauces and extras to go with a ‘real’ British Indian curry.
The rest of the supermarket was also stocked with a wide range of meat, fish, cheese, pasta… basically anything. But I will admit that a lot of these you can still get from your local supermarket. Unless this one happens to be on your doorstop I would recommend shopping at your local for your ‘big shop’ and then stopping off at this one for any treats or specialities. Expats in Berlin – this is not to be missed!
