I feel a little bad for smoothies. They have recently received a lot of negative press thanks to the backlash towards the clean eating crowd. I am pleased that people are finally speaking out about this unhealthy food trend and particularly liking the work done by Not Plant Based, a resource for those with a troubled or confused attitude towards food, that has advice from actual medical professionals rather than from self-taught nutritionists. The founders (having experienced eating disorders themselves) are starting to highlight the dangers of eliminating a significant number of food groups from a diet without actually having any real need to do so.
And so smoothies got bundled into the same category as juicing and we were told that instead of them being good for us we are actually then consuming too much fructose than is needed. But not everyone is drinking a smoothie that is packed full of fruit and veg. Not so long ago I blogged my Apple, Banana and Spinach Smoothie and mentioned that I find it very hard to follow some of the smoothie recipes out there. A single smoothie packed full of avocados, nuts, chia seeds, superfood powders, fruit and veg is enough for me to need a lie down before I have even started my day! Smoothies are great to help us pack in a little more fruit and veg, feed that sweet tooth (that doesn’t involve a kitkat or mars bar!) and something easy to sip on. To enjoy! Please don’t categorize this with the juicing craze. It isn’t the same. No one needs juiced down broccoli, cabbage and sprouts with an avocado thrown in for breakfast every day. And if so, please let’s show more support towards those who do feel this is how their body needs to be treated and centre their lives around it. Because it is an issue.
This Frozen Mixed Berry and Banana Smoothie is how smoothies should be. It is easy, affordable and great to sip on while getting ready for work in the morning. Buying frozen is not unhealthy. It is simply berries that have been frozen but instead you can keep a load in the freezer and take them when you want, without having to worry about buying them fresh when out of season.
- 1 banana (skin peeled and roughly sliced)
- 100g mixed frozen berries
- Dash of water
- Add everything to a blender and blend until smooth.
