Having found chickpeas in Berlin I decided to make some homemade falafel. Falafel in Berlin is actually pretty good and there are plenty of places to enjoy this. Every street has somewhere that does falafel and especially on a warm summers evening it proves to be the popular choice of food. Yet making your own falafel is also quick and easy. I mix mine up a bit with some bombay potatoes. A lot of British food is all about fusion cuisine and this is something that I love to experiment with.
Ingredients:
Falafel:
2 x 400g tinned chickpeas
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp chopped coriander
1 medium free range egg
1 small onion (finely chopped)
1 clove garlic
handful of chopped parsley
- Take a large mixing bowl and mash the chickpeas. Then add a tbspn of olive oil and keep mashing.
- Add the rest of the ingredients apart from the egg. Keep mashing and mixing until everything is well blended together.
- Then add the egg and mix well. Roll into small patties and fry on a high heat 3 mins each side.
Bombay Potatoes:
6 potatoes (medium or small)
1 tbspn cumin
1 tbspn tumeric
1 tbspn garam masala
1 tsp chopped coriander
1 tbspn butter
4 tomatoes
parsley
1 lemon
1 veg stock cube
- Peel and chop potatoes into small chunks. Boil potatoes until parboiled.
- Heat oil in a large pan and fry the spices for a few minutes. Then add the juice of half a lemon.
- Add the butter and then the potatoes and tomatoes. Make sure the potatoes a covered in the spices and add 100ml veg stock. Leave to cook for 10 – 15 mins.
- Serve with fresh parsley and wedges of lemon.
