Coriander and Harissa Mussels

That’s it – summer is officially over. We have had a great summer in Berlin with plenty of sunshine and warm evenings to enjoy an aperol spritz on the balcony or sitting in a beer garden. But we shouldn’t be all doom and gloom about the end of summer. Autumn is one of my favourite seasons and you can already see the fresh autumnal produce creeping into the supermarkets. Pumpkins, apples and root veg – I am already planning on making my next batch of chutney! Read more

Spicy Black Bean Burgers

I first made these vegetarian burgers for a BBQ with a group of friends last summer. I had already planned some sausage rolls, a bacon tart and some beef skewers but then realized that I had not catered for my vegetarian friends! Even the biggest of meat lovers will love these burgers. We sat there on a warm sunny day, with a group of friends and everyone tucked into the burgers – vegetarian or not. It is a recipe for everyone. Read more

Strawberry Jam and Scones

Strawberry season has to be my favourite time of the year. They have summer written all over them. Which is why every year I make a big batch of strawberry jam. Not only is the jam more delicious than any supermarket kind, but when you dig into that jar of sweet strawberries on a cold winter’s day (this recipe will keep you stocked up throughout the cold months) you can think of the Berlin summer. Asparagus and Goats Cheese Tart

I am loving Spring! May is my favourite time of the year in Berlin. The sun is out (well, for some of the time at least!), there are plenty of public holidays and the parks are busy with people hanging out and enjoying the sunshine.

We had friends over last weekend and spent sunday afternoon in the Tiergarten. Of course most of that time was spent at Cafe am Neuen See, a beer garden right by the lake. I am already looking forward to the warm weather this weekend and spending the weekend relaxing in the park with a picnic. One of the things I always make for a picnic is my Asparagus and Goats Cheese Tart which is like a quiche but I use puff pastry instead of shortcrust. Read more

White Asparagus Soup

Ah, Spargelzeit – my favourite time of the year! I have always been fond of Germany’s passion for all things seasonal and the fact that you can only find some produce when in season. Every year I am happy to see asparagus in the supermarkets and at local markets not just because it offically puts an end to the long, cold winter but it is the start of spring and the weather is warming up.

It is the white asparagus that they go crazy for over here in Germany. Read more

Courgetti with Avocado and Cashew Pesto

We have Hemsley and Hemsley to thank for spiralized recipes being so popular and bringing pasta back to those who are gluten intolerent! I don’t have a gluten intolerence but I absolutely love courgetti. I have always tried to cut back on the carbs by using lots of fresh vegetables and courgetti is perfect for this. It may seem like a bit of a ‘health fad’ at the moment but it really is a great alternative to some heavy glutenous pasta and a great way to pack in more of your five a day. Read more

Banana Cereal Bars

In my previous blog post I mentioned how much of a fan I have become of food writers such as Deliciously Ella and Madeliene Shaw. I love Deliciously Ella for her complete vegan and gluten, dairy and sugar free recipes. I also find Madeleine Shaw’s recipes absolutely delicious (and quick and easy!) where she simply takes on a dairy, sugar and gluten free diet and still uses fresh fish and meat, something that I could not wipe out from my food intake completely! What got me to really test out their recipes properly Read more

Creamy Mushroom Pasta

I have become a big fan of Deliciously Ella! I have always followed her blog and tried out a few of her recipes but recently I have become a little obsessed with her style of cooking. Her gluten free, dairy free and vegan recipes have resulted in two bestselling cookbooks and she is featured in various magazines and sites with an array of recipes suited to all tastes. I personally could not live by a complete vegan, dairy and gluten free diet. Put a good quality steak cooked black and blue in front of me Read more

Pad Thai

I have overindulged recently. Both my husband and I have been incredibly busy with work, it was my birthday which resulted in lots of eating out and this weekend it was a friend’s wedding in the UK with plenty of food and a free bar… It is fair to say that I plan to enjoy my apartment a bit more this week after work! Saying that I know only too well how easy it to order a take out or to be tempted to go for some dinner and drinks with Read more

Irish Chowder

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! After getting married last year I decided to double-barrel my name to Silford-McLoughlin and today I have already had quite a few skype messages and emails being signed off with ‘Happy St. Patrick’s Day!’. This has never happened before. But seeing as I am now a bit Irish by marriage I might aswell use this as an excuse to join in with the celebrations tonight after work! Read more
